I have reasons that I cannot speak of why I am possibly making the cross to linux. One I can mention is that it's free and growing. Windows is a stagnant cesspool.

Yeah, the AI on the chess games (on easy) kicks my ass EVERY time. :( I always overlook something. BTW, it's definately too late, but nVidia has better driver support then ATI. Same with HP over Espon.

Add some of the additonal repositories and you'll have a HUGE amount of software you can install. Also, only so much can be squeezed onto a single CD, so see what else you can install. There's a ton of stuff, but some of it is duplicates (like multiple text editors, word processors, web browsers, email clients, etc). Find what you like and get rid of what you don't. Generally, what's pre-installed tends to be the most popular. If you need something specific, but can't find it, let me know. There's a lot of software available, the problem is finding it when you don't know the name of it.

I suppose I may as well move to linux. Today my second hard drive which had the bulk of my important files died. It was a Seagate too, fairly new. So much lost, I might have a funeral ceremony, lol. The only thing keeping me on Windows now is Yahoo and AO -- both of which work for linux. I'd say Yahoo does anyways, don't know for sure.

Yahoo makes a Linux client for their IM, but it's years behind the Windows version. Either use Pidgin (for Gnome) or Kopete (for KDE) and get a multi-IM that works great. Neither have all the extra features that you'll have on Windows, but if all you need is to chat, then it's good enough. I've been playing AO on Linux since I discovered the game. In fact, the reason I found it was because I was looking for a RISK type game for Linux. :)

One thing to keep in mind is that heat is the number 1 enemy of hard drives. If your drives get hot to the touch, then they WILL fail. It's just a matter of when, not if.

They run warm, but not hot. I downloaded a program that was able to get any and every file I wanted off of it! So now I can just reformat (hopefully) and pop them back on it hehe.

As for Linux, I'm troubled over whether or not I want to use it. I'm afraid of a lot of compatibility issues. I will probably do the thing where I install linux on top of windows and when I dont absolutely need to be on windows, play around on linux and see how it goes.

As for the ATI Nvidia thing you mentioned, Slime has an nvidia card I hope to borrow that's better than my current ati one.

Edit: Pidgin is on my linux, it's a multi IM program?

Even warm may not be good for the drive. Download a SMART program for windows or run smartctl under Linux. Do both the short and long tests to see if the drive might be physically dieing. Most modern hard drives should have SMART installed. If it's ready to fail, don't start using the drive again.

Some programs just won't work or won't have a Linux substitute. It's just one of those things that you'll have to live with.

Yes, Pidgin is a multi IM program.

I don't know of any for Windows, but smartctl for Linux is free and usually included by default. If not, just install it.

What modem do you have? Most WinModems won't work, but some might. If you can give me the make/model, I'll take a look and see if it's usable.

The one I'm using currently only says "Gateway Data Fax Modem"

I have a few others a Robotics model and a Conextant among them, but ffs I can't find them. I'll look later on in the daytime.

I don't know that I recall a post in the recent past that hasn't degraded to an argument between Travis and Lag within the first 3 posts.

Hey, everyone start playing CoD4!

I doubt the Gateway modem will work. It's not a real modem. The drivers handel all of the work while the "modem" just connects to the phone line. If you can manage to find the other modems, try them and see if they'll work.
